Alright so I’m not exactly a ‘hero.’ I don’t slay monsters, I don’t rescue Princesses from evil overlords or anything like that.
But in today’s world, what does make a hero?
I like to think that a hero never gives up. That no matter how high the odds are they keep fighting.
Ever since this year started that’s how I’ve felt. Mainly because it was my choice. My new year’s resolution for 2011 was to be more positive. To say yes to things more often.
And my word did my life seem dull until now.
Of course there are a few great highlights; spending Christmas in L.A. back in 2004 and the three years I spent at college between 2005 and 2008 are only a couple, but this year has been an explosion.
Before this year, I could probably count the number of friends I had on my fingers. Now, I’d have to take quite a lot of time if I were asked to name all of my friends!
And yes, there are those I consider closer than others, but I love every one of my friends the same.
This year I finally got a job. I say finally because I think it’s probably four years I’ve been looking and while I have had interviews, they were as far as I had gotten. I’ve had the job for nearly half a year now and I have to say I work with some of the greatest (if a little crazy at times) people I’ve ever met.
Even though the year has been a positive one overall, I have had a few days where I have felt a little depressed, but hey, every hero has their off days right?
And I like to think that life can knock us all down, but it’s our willingness to get back up and move forward that makes us stronger.
I have been going out a lot more often. And yes, I mean going out to drink. But it’s socialising, and I have many years to catch up on. Whether it’s with my workmates, or all of my friends, I love going out. The prospect of being able to just talk and talk for hours while knocking back a few beers is a great night out in of itself. There’s no need for fights or arguments but unfortunately in this town, there are those who do and just spoil the whole night.
My writing has been boosted this year as well. I’ve written various reviews, posted news articles and some small blog posts on a site known as Rebound Radio. (Speaking of which I really should get back to writing more content for them. It’s been a long while…)
I seemed to have stopped writing poetry as well, which I absolutely feel terrible about because I love doing it. I’ve written a few personal pieces though after a certain someone inspired me to. (They know who they are.)
One thing I really need to get back to as well is producing some music because it’s fun and I’ve missed doing it since college. I got a bass guitar this year and I’ve been learning pretty much non-stop ever since I got it on my birthday. Don’t get me wrong, I love my bass, but I really miss using the computer and my keyboard to create full tracks. Maybe that’s something I can work on next year.
So that’s it for now. 2011 has been an awesome year. I’ve made great friends, a couple of new enemies and done some new things. And some pretty stupid things too. That’s what life is though I guess, mixing the new and the stupid. Who knows what the future holds?
Either way, I know I have the support of my friends to help me through.
This is one hero who will never back down!
